2021 Rapley Trail Vineyard 'Henry Ayrton's Block' Pinot Noir
The Henry Ayrton's block of our Rapley Trail Vineyard is one of the more special wines we make. "Henry's" is the first fruit to ripen in the Rapley Trial and the day we pick is always a momentous occasion- the harvest crew is still fresh and excitement levels run high for the arrival of this prized fruit. It is a particularly intense and structured wine that rewards some time in the cellar. - Nathan Kandler, Winegrower
Vineyard
Henry Ayrton's Block, formerly known as the 'B' Block, lies at the lowest portion of the Rapley Trail Vineyard and is always the first block to ripen; its position at the bottom of the vineyard allows for some protection from the elements. The soil is fractured shale, shallow, and well-drained. These factors contribute to a unique flavor profile, great texture, and dense mouthfeel.
Winemaker Notes
The 2021 vintage was a welcome change from the catastrophe of 2020, which saw devastating fires throughout the region. Sugar and acidity levels tracked well and while crop size was shorter than we would prefer, we were able to harvest perfectly ripened fruit at a reasonable pace. The resulting wines have excellent balance and intensity. In comparison to our most recent vintages, there are some similarities to 2019 in that the wines possess great elegance and site specificity.

Other Notes
The 2021 Pinot Noir Rapley Trail Vineyard Henry Ayrton's Block is a statuesque, towering beauty. Sweet red cherry, mint, cinnamon, wild flowers and anise all soar out of the glass. The majestic, soaring Pinot has it all, yet nothing stands out, as all the elements are so impeccably balanced. What a knockout. Sadly, there are just 75 cases to go around. - 97 points.
