2017 Langley Hill Vineyard 'Anna Cristina's Block' Chardonnay

Add To Cart

Named after Dr. Fogarty's first grandaughter, this is our first block wine made from Chardonnay. This special section of Langley Hill shows the balance of finesse and power that we love about this special hillside vineyard. Only two barrels produced.

Like the “Will’s Cabin” Pinot Noir, “Walker’s” Nebbiolo, “Henry Ayrton’s Block” Pinot Noir and “James Thomas’ Block” Pinot Noir, Anna Cristina’s Block is a special bottling named after a third-generation member of the Fogarty family. Anna is actually the oldest of “Generation Three”, so we are remiss in naming a wine for her, but we think you’ll find it was worth the wait. Like all the “Special Bottlings” we may not make this wine every year, but when the stars align we’ll do it. Made from two distinct blocks in the 41 year-old Langley Hill Vineyard, this wine is a fine example of the focus, breadth, richness and texture that typifies our Chardonnay wines in the best vintages. We’ve sourced a bit of fruit from the famously phenolic, acid-rich “lower swail” (the same area where we find the grapes for our sought-after Sparkling Wine” and we also pick a part of the sunny upslope area that gives us riper, richer fruit. For those who are familiar with the vineyard, imagine the “block” being rectangular, running from the southeast corner of the vineyard to the northwest top of the hill. The resulting wine has deep, rich aromas and focused, bright flavors with wonderful texture on the pallet.
Production Notes
Record setting rains replenished our thirsty soils and gave our old vines a much-needed reprieve from four drought stressed seasons. The 2017 vintage was another year of record setting heat, continuing our string of record setting temperatures. Luckily, Spring was mild and allowed us to set the best crop we have seen since 2012. A torrid heat spike over the Labor Day started the growing season with a bang and had us off and running at sprinter’s pace. The weather following was mild and allowed for the latest harvest we have seen in some time. It will go down as a vintage with good yields and potentially great quality.
Other Notes
The 2017 Chardonnay Langley Hill Vineyard Anna Cristina's Block is scented of honey-drizzled almonds, quince, red apple peel, pastry, lemon curd and Golden Delicious apples with an orange blossom undercurrent. The palate is medium to full-bodied and lightly creamy, gaining in savory intensity as it sits in the mouth. It has juicy, addicting freshness calling you back, and it finishes long and energetic.
