2016 Damiana Vineyard Chardonnay

Add To Cart

Damiana's site expression is a powerful one; the wine offers a combination of richness and freshness. The wine has copious stone fruits buttressed by a spine of acid and phenolic weight.

Our oldest vineyard, planted in 1978, often produces our densest and most opulent Chardonnay. It’s exposure is primarily southwestern, which can mean more, which can mean more sun during the growing season; though this site is heavily influenced by maritime breeze most afternoons. Shallow top soils of fractured Lambert shale and mudstone limit vigor and lead to wines with great concentration and intensity. This vineyard is one of our first picks Estate Chardonnay.
Production Notes
The 2016 Vintage was another drought year, with early bud-break, bloom and veraison. Poor weather during the early bloom caused shatter and millerandage. Vine stress became an issue late in the year with many of our dry farmed vines showing water and nutrient stress for the first time. The resulting wines are bright and energetic with mid-weight personalities. They are profoundly aromatic and balanced wines that are site expressive and pure.
Other Notes
Lastly, the 2016 Chardonnay Damiana Vineyard comes from a rocky site located just beside the estate, and it’s one of the more exotic and complex wines in the lineup. Revealing lots of minerality as well as tart citrus and tropical fruit characteristics, it’s medium bodied, has vibrant acidity, good mid-palate depth, and terrific balance. This classic Chardonnay is going to benefit from a year in bottle and it should age gracefully giving it vibrancy.
